Basic Knowledge of Diabetes

The purpose of this blog is to help diabetics patients to take control of their health. The diabetes disease has the different classification, but all of them resume only one condition: high blood glucose level in the bloodstream.

The glucose is the main source of energy used by our body's cells. Whatever type of carbohydrates eaten will be finally converted to that sugar called glucose. When the body receives a high amount of energy(glucose), it normally increases the production of insulin and when the energy level is too low, it increases the production of glucagon.

The insulin and the glucagon are enzymes created by an organ called the pancreas. These regulate the glucose level. When there is too much glucose, insulin helps to convert the glucose into glycogen and when there is a lack of glucose, glucagon helps to convert glycogen into glucose.

That is the reason when the body does not produce sufficient insulin(type 1) or not use it properly(type 2), the glucose metabolism is unbalanced and all we are trying to do is to bring that high glucose level to normal and prevent further disorders.

The type 1 diabetes will need to have a healthy lifestyle but still, need extra source of insulin

The type 2 also needs a healthy lifestyle and might reverse the use of insulin to control the disease. In most cases can be treated with diet, exercises and sometimes, medications.

The normal glucose level for non-diabetic patients should be between 3.9 and 5.5 mmol/L (70 to 100 mg/dL).Anything above or lower needs observation.

Extra fat around our midsection of the body, an inactive lifestyle and high blood triglycerides – these three are main risk factors for most of the diabetes case. Excessive thirst and frequent urination is the main symptom. Fatigue and blurred vision is also regular notification. Pre-diabetes – is a state of body and its immune system that is characterized by aggregated glucose level.  Additionally, a fasting blood sugar level measurement can ensure the status. A doctor may ask to get the report of an A1C test to check for diabetes. This test provides the calculation of average blood glucose level over the last three months. An oral glucose tolerance test is a useful test for diagnosing diabetes. This test calculates that how efficiently our body clears glucose from blood after drinking a solution. The liquid solution contains a measured amount of glucose or water mix of sugar or glucose.
If blood glucose level stays high for a long time, it damages our body tissues. Eventually, diabetes may shorten one’s life expectancy. So it is very important to visit the doctor, get tested and get the best diabetes management plan, if we suspect, may have diabetes.

She focus not only in the medicated side of the treatment but much in the patient's education in order for them to understand the disease. She believes the patient's coorporation is crucial to design an individualized treatment. The final goal is to reverse the process and help the body properly regulate the hormones.
